Words in bolded pink = comments about the homework that you should take note of.

PART I

ESSAY WRITING

You are advised to write between 350 words and 500 words on ONE of the following topics. At the head of your composition, write the number of the topic you have chosen.

  1. Compose an original short story entitled ‘The Frightened Child’.

  1. Jealousy.

  1. Write a story based on:

‘I had practiced saying it a hundred times, but when the moment came, I just couldn’t open my mouth!’

This can be either typed or written out.

PART II

BOOK REVIEWS

Read at least 2 new books by 2 different authors and write a review on each of these 2 books. Each review should consist of the following:

  1. Title of book
  2. Name of author
  3. Synopsis – an outline of the plot in 50–100 words
  4. Personal commentary – what you liked and/or disliked about the book in 50–100 words*

* You could comment on the plot, characters, themes, style of writing, lesson(s) learnt, etc.

PHRASE BOOK - VOCABULARY

At the end of each book review, write down 20 new words/phrases which you came across in the book. Write down the meaning of each word as used in the context of the book and write down one original sentence for each word to show that you understand the meaning of the word.

You may refer to the dictionary for the meaning of the words but you are NOT to copy the sentences from the book or the dictionary.

Book review: Typed or written (up to you)

Phrase book: Remember to categorize your phrases/words THE SAME WAY YOU CATEGORIZED YOUR OLD PHRASE BOOK. Then write in the words/phrases from the books.

PART III

TALKING POINT

Collect and print/cut out 3 articles* on each of the following topics

- Beauty

- Family

The articles should reflect opinions of different parties on the above issues. Based on what you have read and understand, provide your personal views on the following statements in 100-200 words.

(1) In the world today, outer beauty is equally important, if not more important than inner beauty.

(2) The traditional roles (Men as breadwinners and women as house-carers) in the family is no longer relevant.
